Aluminum Wiring Services in Phoenix, AZ
Protecting Your Home from Potentially Dangerous Products
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, a copper shortage made the material expensive and difficult to find. Instead, home builders and electrical equipment manufacturers turned to aluminum as the wiring of the future. This option was cheap, readily available, and just as easy to work with as copper was, allowing builders to keep costs down and homes affordable.
However, several decades on, we’ve learned that aluminum is not the miracle material it was hoped to be. Aluminum is prone to oxidation and corrosion over time, and this corrosion can cause all sorts of trouble for electrical systems. In fact, they are prone to so many issues that some insurance companies will no longer cover homes that still utilize aluminum wiring in any capacity.

How to Tell You Have Aluminum Wiring
If you are concerned you may have aluminum wiring still in use, there are a few easy things you can check. Your electrical panel is a good place to start. Take a close look at the wires coming off of each breaker and you should see some text printed on the plastic shielding. If you see the letters “AL,” “ALUM,” or even the word “Aluminum” printed on the shielding, then you have aluminum wire.
However, over time this printing may fade. The next place to look is at any length of exposed wire, especially the wire coming off the breaker itself. Copper has a very distinct color—either a brownish-gold or a bright blueish-green when oxidized. Aluminum wiring will be the same characteristic shiny silver that you’re more than likely familiar with (the same color as the top of a typical soft drink can). This color may be somewhat muted, and could be distorted by a chalky white film that can accumulate when aluminum oxidizes. If you see this film, reach out for help right away.
